What Can't Be Lost

Exterior mural — aerosol, latex, and gold leaf
Spruce Street Mini Park, Central District, Seattle, WA · 2022
Commissioned by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and Seattle Parks and Recreation · In collaboration with Craig Cundiff

Before a single mark was made, the CD spoke first. A community survey reached 79 respondents — more than 90% of them residents of or deeply connected to the neighborhood. Their voices shaped and revised the mural, concept by concept.

What emerged is a portrait of cultural rootedness and childhood wonder. An explosion of multicolored flowers, each variety drawn from the many cultures present in the Central District, fills the foreground from edge to edge. On the far panels, teal botanical forms extend the composition outward, tying the whole wall into a single living ecosystem.
